Building Inspiring Ideas
The South African Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation (SASMEC) is an independent National body Registered in terms of section 14. It was founded in 1991 under the name of African Business and Manufacturers Development Association (ABUMDA) under the support of Kagiso trust by then the biggest black NGO in South Africa fighting the apartheid system. ABUMDA was formed to produce black manufactures and to support small and Medium Business in South African economic market, to enhance entrepreneurship, productivity, fight unemployment and poverty
ABUMDA/SASMEC believes that the prosperity of every economy, depends on a symmetrical development and co-existence of four production factors, namely: Natural resources, Capital, Labour and Entrepreneurship. Whereas South Africa has big reserves of Natural Resources, sophisticated financial systems.
Unskilled and semi-skilled labor constitute the large segment of South Africa’s workforce, together with insufficient Entrepreneurship among the black people are some of the major causes of unemployment and poverty in South Africa, therefore there is a need to support The Black Small and Medium Business in all aspects of development. SASMEC addresses this challenge through An interactive multi-actors and multi-stakeholders mechanism that among others but not limited to, accesses to potential markets, facilitates funding and skills training to this sector. It has 91 small manufacturers in Gauteng and has trained 2000 people country nationally.

What we believe in
SASMEC believes that the biggest challenge facing policy makers is how best to develop an approach to SMMEs that achieves a sufficient degree of co-ordination between supply side and demand potential, it believes that investing financial resources in improving a supply potential where there are high constraints in the demand side is a serious risk and one of the main contributing factors to the failure of the SME sector.
Our Story
The South African Active Civil Society Organisation(SAACSO) the mother body of South African Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation (Sasmec) has been actively involved in anti-xenophobia campaign nationally since 2007. Based on its extensive research and active involvement in the small business entrepreneurs conflict resolutions between local and foreign nationals, Saacso developed a programme that brings all small retailers especially spaza shop operators under one organisation(Sddo) to establish communication channels through which conflicts can be resolved and business interests synchronised pursuant to common development goals rather than competing among themselves.
Pursuant to this goal, Saacso has established a national project Small Dealers Development Organisation (SDDO) to develop this sector, to facilitate active participation of local entrepreneurs in a micro and small retail industry, establish a common self-regulatory framework to minimize competition among members and develop a code of conduct for members to encourage cooperation rather than competition among members
